What’s this? The Oppo Find X has already been announced, so this must be something else right? True! At their press conference yesterday Honor announced their new Honor Magic 2 – and it slides.
First off, let’s all just revel in the fact that an actual sliding phone is coming back to the market. I, for one, am very happy about this.
Honor Magic 2
George Zhao took to the stage to announce the Honor Magic 2, and the first aspect of the device to hit us was the FullView display. It has no notch, which in 2018 is like a car having no steering wheel it seems. It has no chins either. In fact it is claimed to deliver an almost 100% screen to body ratio instead. Now, even the most ardent notch fans out there (are there any?) would probably make that trade off given the chance, right?
Sliding Into A Selfie
Whilst the Oppo Find X delivers a similar trick to get rid of the notch, it does so with an internal mechanism. The Honor Magic 2 seemed to be all about the manual experience. The slide up back plate will house the selfie camera and no doubt an array of sensors. Whether this is an early production sample and Honor intend to motorise the back plate similar to the Oppo Find X remains to be seen. Either way it still looks tasty.
Little else is known about the specifications in this device, aside from the Kirin 980 being in tow to power it. It’ll have all the usual specifications, but the most intriguing aspect will be just how Honor manage to control the placement of key components on that slider, and how durable it will be.
