It’s not officially open yet, but Mobile World Congress is underway and Alcatel is one of the first companies to offer up their 2018 lineup of devices. The Alcatel 1x, 3, 3V, 3X and 5 are all new devices for 2018, and they all have compelling features and an even more compelling price.
Alcatel didn’t skimp on their event in Barcelona at the Marquee, delivering not just one new hotness, but five new devices across three product families with the 1X, 3v, 3X, 3, and 5.
Alcatel 5 – MWC2018
The more flagship orientated offering, the Alcatel 5, sports a 5.7″ 1440 x 720 18:9 display with an octa-core Mediatek MT6570 SoC, 32GB of storage and 3GB RAM with a 3000mAh battery. The key specifications of this device are not the SoC numbers, but instead the camera package. The Alcatel 5 delivers a dual front-facing camera setup, with a front facing flash.
The front-facing setup can deliver a 120 degree wide-angle selfie, with a large pixel size, as well as a 13MP image at f/2.0 aperture as is evidenced by the image above of an incredibly tired individual.
The Alcatel 5 will be available in February 2018 for €230.
Alcatel 3, 3X, 3V – MWC2018
The “3” range of devices is perhaps more compelling for their pricing than there design aesthetic. Delivering a 5.5″ 14404 x 720 display on the 3, with a 5.7″ display on the 3X of the same resolution, and a 6″ 2160 x 1080 display on the 3V, the price points of €150, €180 and €190 respectively is not to be sniffed at. There are some oddities however with the 3X seemingly missing the cut and only having Android Nougat in tow whilst the 3 and 3X have Oreo.
Alcatel 1X – MWC2018
The Alcatel 1X is perhaps my favourite of the bunch as it has something special going for it; the Android Go moniker. The stripped down version of Android, usually for lower-end devices, runs like a charm in our brief hands-on, and whilst the matte aesthetic screams budget, the sub €100 phone (€109 for the dual-SIM version), available in April, might be just what emerging markets, or bang-for-buck seekers, are looking for.
